What a tax invoice must show
If you’re registered for GST, the ATO says a tax invoice for a sale under $1,000 must show:
- That it’s intended to be a tax invoice (the heading “Tax invoice” does it).
- Your identity (business name).
- Your ABN.
- The date it was issued.
- A brief description of what you sold, with quantity and price.
- The GST amount (or, if GST is exactly one-eleventh of the total, the words “Total price includes GST”).
- Which items are taxable, if some aren’t.
For sales of $1,000 or more, it must also show the buyer’s identity or ABN. This template lays all of that out for you. You must give a tax invoice within 28 days if a customer asks for one (unless the sale is $82.50 or less including GST).
Not registered for GST? Untick the box. You can still send an invoice, it just isn’t a “tax invoice” and doesn’t show GST.
Common questions
What is the difference between an invoice and a tax invoice?
A tax invoice is the version GST-registered businesses give, with the ABN and GST details the ATO requires. If you’re not registered for GST, you issue a plain invoice without GST.
Do I need the customer’s details on a tax invoice?
For sales of $1,000 or more, yes: the buyer’s identity or ABN. Under $1,000 it’s optional.
Is my bank account information saved?
No. Nothing you type is stored or sent anywhere. It stays on your device until you close the page.
