How to work out GST
Australian GST is 10%. Two quick ways to do it:
| You want to | Do this | Example ($1,000) |
|---|---|---|
| Add GST to a price | Multiply by 1.1 | $1,000 × 1.1 = $1,100 |
| Find the GST in a total | Divide by 11 | $1,100 ÷ 11 = $100 |
| Find the price before GST | Divide by 1.1 | $1,100 ÷ 1.1 = $1,000 |
A common mistake is taking 10% off a GST-inclusive total. 10% of $1,100 is $110, but the GST in it is only $100.
