- 2 stainless screws per board at every joist.
- 10% extra decking for offcuts and cutting around posts.
- Oil at about 10 m² per litre per coat, 2 coats on new timber. Check your product’s label.

Deck more than 1 m off the ground? A balustrade is typically required. Under the National Construction Code it’s usually at least 1 m high with gaps no wider than 125 mm. See the NCC and QBCC.

Things people ask us
Which timber should I pick for a coastal deck?
Spotted gum is our most popular: hard-wearing with lovely grain. Blackbutt is paler and is a good pick for bushfire-prone blocks. Merbau is a rich red-brown. All three are typically Class 1 above ground. Try the timber picker, then we’ll bring real boards to the measure.
Do I need council or building approval?
Often, yes. In Queensland, decks more than 1 m off the ground, larger decks and roofed pergolas attached to the house usually need building approval through a private certifier. We’ll tell you at the measure and can organise it. The QBCC has more on building work in Queensland.
How long does a new deck take?
It depends on size, stairs, roof and weather. We’ll give you a start date and an honest timeframe in the written quote, and we clean up every day while we’re on site.
How often should I oil my deck?
On the coast, typically every 6 to 12 months for a deck in full sun, less for a covered one. When water stops beading on the boards, it’s time.
Why stainless fixings?
Salt air corrodes ordinary galvanised screws, which leaves black stains around the heads and loosens boards over time. Stainless costs a bit more and lasts.
Can you repair my deck, or does it need replacing?
Lots of decks just need a few boards, a stair tread or a balustrade re-fixed. Run the deck health check and send it through. We’ll tell you straight if a repair makes more sense.
Is the measure and quote really free?
Yes. We come out, measure up and give you a written quote. No charge and no pressure.
