    What keeps tripping it?

Safety switches trip for a reason: they’ve sensed electricity leaking where it shouldn’t. Tell us when it happens and what’s on that circuit, and we’ll rank the usual suspects.

    Free toolSafety switch trip-finder
    When does it trip?
What runs on that circuit? (tick any you know of)

    Likely suspects

Typical patterns electricians see. Not a diagnosis.

Safe to tryUnplug everything on that circuit, reset the switch, then plug things back one at a time. The one that trips it is your culprit, so leave it unplugged.
Leave to a sparkyAnything hardwired (oven, hot water, pool pump, aircon), anything wet, or a switch that won’t stay up with everything unplugged.

How it works: each answer adds weight to the faults that commonly cause that pattern in Queensland homes (moisture in outdoor fittings after rain, worn heating elements, ageing fridge compressors, off-peak hot water switching on overnight). It’s a starting point for a conversation, not a replacement for testing. More on safety switches from Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office.

      What happens when you call

      No call centre. No runaround.

Here’s exactly what happens after you ring, whether it’s 2pm or 2am.

      1. You call

A licensed electrician picks up, not a call centre or an answering machine.

      2. We talk it through

A few questions on the phone. If it’s safe to wait until morning, we’ll tell you honestly.

      3. We’re on the way

If it can’t wait, a sparky heads out in a van carrying the common parts.

      4. Fixed and explained

Most jobs are fixed on the first visit, and you’ll know what failed and why.

Ready for the 2027 smoke alarm law?

Queensland’s smoke alarm law is being phased in. Rentals and homes being sold already need to comply. Every other home must by 1 January 2027. Check where yours stands.

      4

alarms, approx minimum for your layout. You have 2.

Based on the Queensland Fire Department’s summary of the law: alarms must be photoelectric (AS 3786:2014), interconnected, under 10 years old, hardwired or powered by a 10-year non-removable battery, and installed in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms to the rest of the home, and on every storey. The count here is an approximate minimum; placement rules (away from corners, lights and aircon vents) can add more. Check the details at fire.qld.gov.au.

        Who picks up

A real sparky on the phone.

When you call Northgate, you talk to an electrician, not a call centre. We’ll ask what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you honestly if it can wait until morning. Sometimes the best advice at midnight is “flick that switch back up and go to bed.”

When it can’t wait, our vans carry the common parts, so most jobs are fixed on the first visit, not the second.

Straight answersIs it you, or is it the street? We’ll tell you on the phone.

        Questions

What people ask us at midnight.

Still not sure? Ring us. Talking it through is free, and it’s often all you need.

Do you really answer at 2am?
Yes. We’re open 24 hours, 7 days, and the person who answers is an electrician. You won’t get a call centre that takes a message and rings back in the morning.
How do I know if it can wait until morning?
Ask yourself: is anything hot, burning, sparking or wet? Is anyone relying on power for medical equipment or a freezer full of food? If not, it often can wait. Run the power-out checker, or just ring and we’ll tell you honestly.
The whole street is dark. Should I call you?
Probably not. If the neighbours are out too, it’s most likely a network outage, and that’s Energex’s job, not ours. Check their outage information at energex.com.au. If your street comes back on and you don’t, call us.
My safety switch keeps tripping. Is that dangerous?
The switch is doing its job: it’s sensing electricity leaking where it shouldn’t, often through water or a worn appliance. Don’t keep resetting it. Unplug everything, reset once, and plug back in one at a time. If it won’t stay up with everything unplugged, call us. The trip-finder helps narrow it down.
There’s a powerline down after the storm. What do I do?
Stay well clear, at least 8 metres, keep kids and pets away, and treat it as live. Call 000 if anyone’s in danger, then Energex on 13 19 62. Once the network side is safe, we can repair damage on your side, like the point where the line meets the house and anything that got wet.
Do you charge more after hours?
After-hours work costs more than a weekday visit, like it does everywhere. We’ll tell you what the callout costs on the phone before anyone gets in the van, so there are no surprises at the door.
Do I need new smoke alarms before 2027?
If you own and live in your home in Queensland, it needs interconnected photoelectric alarms in the right places by 1 January 2027. Rentals and homes being sold already need them. The smoke alarm check gives you an approximate count in under a minute.
Do you do everyday jobs too, or just emergencies?
Both. Emergencies come first, but we also do switchboard upgrades, EV chargers, solar fault finding, kitchen circuits, lights and power points. Send the details through the form and we’ll get back to you today.
