What we do

Everything the ATO wants, none of the shoebox.

Most of our clients are one-ute businesses: a sparky, a tiler, a landscaper with a trailer. We keep the paperwork small, the fees fixed and the answers in plain English.

Common claims, by trade

What can a sparky usually claim?

Tap your trade. These are the things we most often see missed at tax time. Only the business share counts, and you need records.

Most sole-trader tradies

    Sparky extras

Typical examples only, not a full list. Private costs aren’t deductible, and how you claim bigger items (depreciation, the instant asset write-off) depends on the rules that year. See the ATO’s record keeping for business.

      How it works

      Four steps, mostly by text.

No need to take a morning off. Most clients never come into the office.

      1. 01

        Text or book a call

Tell Josh your trade and what’s worrying you. He replies the same working day.

      2. 02

        Send the paperwork

Xero access, or snap your receipts. We send a checklist so nothing’s missed.

      3. 03

        We do the numbers

Reconcile, claim everything you’re entitled to, and flag anything odd.

      4. 04

        You get a text

What you owe or get back, when it’s due, and what to set aside for next quarter.

      Key dates 2026–27

Don’t get pinged by the ATO.

Common due dates for quarterly BAS and tax. If you lodge through us, you often get more time.

If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day. Monthly BAS and some businesses have different dates: see the ATO’s due dates by month.

        About Ledgerline

From sparky to CPA. Still speaks tradie.

Josh Keller did his electrical apprenticeship out of Caboolture, then studied commerce at night after watching too many mates get stung by tax bills they didn’t see coming. He started Ledgerline in 2014 with a simple idea: tradies should know what they owe before it’s due.

Twelve years on, it’s a small Brendale office with Josh and bookkeeper Tam, looking after sole traders and small crews across Brisbane’s north and Moreton Bay.

        FAQ

        Questions tradies ask us.

Still stuck? Text Josh. That’s what the button’s for.

Do I have to register for GST?
You must register once your GST turnover hits $75,000 a year (or is expected to). Below that it’s optional. Registering means charging 10% GST but also claiming GST back on materials and tools. We’ll help you decide. The ATO’s registering for GST page has the details.
I’m two years behind on my tax. Am I in trouble?
Probably less than you think, and the sooner it’s sorted the better. We lodge the missing years, talk to the ATO on your behalf and, if there’s a bill, help set up a payment plan. You won’t get a lecture.
        Can I claim my ute?
Usually, for the work share. Cars can use cents per km (up to 5,000 km) or a logbook. Some utes (one tonne or more, or 9+ seats) count as work vehicles with different rules. Try the ute calculator, then ask Josh which way gets you more.
Should I be a sole trader or a company?
Most tradies start as sole traders because it’s simple and cheap. A company can make sense once profits are higher, you’re taking on staff or you want to separate personal and business risk. It depends on your numbers, so let’s look at them together.
        Do I need Xero?
Not necessarily. If you invoice a handful of builders a month, a spreadsheet and a business bank account can work. Once you have more invoices, staff or GST, Xero or MYOB saves hours. Tam can set it up so it mostly runs itself.
How much should I put aside for tax?
It depends on your profit, but many sole traders set aside 20–30% of profit plus the GST they collect. Use the set-aside calculator for your own number.
What’s a TPAR and do I need one?
The Taxable Payments Annual Report is due 28 August if you’re in building and construction (and some other industries) and you pay subcontractors. It lists who you paid. We lodge it with your year-end work.
Do I have to come into the office?
No. Most clients text, email and do a video call. Tuesday and Thursday calls run till 7pm, so you can do it after knock-off.
