How we work it out: overall diameter = rim × 25.4 mm + 2 × (width × profile %). Speedo change is the ratio of the two diameters, so it's approximate and ignores tyre wear. Many shops use about ±3% as a rule of thumb for a size change. Queensland has limits on tyre and wheel changes in its light vehicle modification rules, and tyres are checked for a safety certificate. Are your tyres still legal, and still safe in a Townsville wet season downpour?
Typical guidance, not a safety inspection. Queensland's legal minimum tread is 1.5 mm across the tread. Grip in the wet drops off well before that, so many drivers replace around 3 mm. Most tyre makers suggest yearly checks once a tyre is 5 years old, and replacement by about 10 years whatever the tread. Uneven wear, pulling and vibration usually point to alignment or balance.
